Final Exam Morgan

Part 1:

1. Why did you choose this film over the others?

- I decided to choose this film besides the others because in this film, it tells us about the life story of Jean-Michel Basquiat and how he would become a well known artist as well. It would also show his life before he got into art, like in the video, not only would it show off himself as a person and artist, he would also have some struggles throughout his career as well. For example, When he was broke, one of his friends said that he should pursue in making art, gave him cash and started to make different works of art in his style, and his friend would sell them to people to get himself a good amount of cash in his pocket, since he used to use postcards in his style along with graffiti with the symbol of SAMO (Same Old S#!t). He also didn’t have a great family or childhood life on top of that, his mother was mentally ill and his father believed in corporal punishment. He also got addicted to heroin, which led to his death, due to an overdose of heroin as well.

2. Discuss the filmmaker's approach to documenting the artist(s) and their work. How does it compare to the other films you have watched this semester?

- In terms of the filmmaker’s approach to the artist throughout the video, it took a really interesting turn this tie around. This time in terms of filmmaking, they showed off footage of when Basquiat was still alive and showing off his rise to art stardom in the art world. Just like the other videos that we were required to watch, some of them were compared, in terms of other people being involved in terms of interviews of what the artist was like and what the artist’s passion was from different viewpoints, hence the other people involved in interviews. They would also show off his artwork in different galleries and tell us what his mindset was like when making them as well, taking inspirations from Andy Warhol and inspired by such things like jazz music.

3. Discuss the artist(s) work and approach to artmaking.

- In terms of Basquiat’s approach to making art, it started around the 1980s and he was known to be a Neo-Expressionist painter. When he got around to making art, he was self-taught at an early age on using sheets of paper that his father brought home, and that was when the creative side of Basquiat started to be unleashed, in which his mother encouraged him to pursue a talent in art. The main form of art that caught his eye was graffiti in New York City in the 1970s. As already mentioned, he transitioned to making paintings in the 1980s, his first painting was made in 1981 and eventually got sold as well.

4. Discuss the artist(s) major contribution to the artworld.

- In terms of the contributions to the art world for Basquiat, he made quite the impact in the art world. He decided to break down some barriers in terms of his Neo-Expressionist when it comes to his works of art. At times, he would would mix up his work/medias and also goes with any different surfaces or textures used as well, whether it be making paintings, drawings, or a collage. The style he would bring to the table focuses on African and Caribbean art, also mixing in some elements, like jazz, poetry, and other American culture as well.

5. Discuss the most meaningful learning experience in this course from this semester for you.

- In terms of the class as a whole, I loved how we dove into and learned about different artists as well. In terms of the videos that we were required to watch, it shows us different artists from entirely different backgrounds as a whole as well. Each different artist we learned about had a different style and how they’d present themselves in the art world as a whole as well and how they made a name for themselves. Also learning about how each of the films was differently made as well, bringing up old footage of what the respective artist was like back when they were still alive, bringing up different locations of where the artwork is displayed, and what people played a part in the artist’s life.

Part 2:

Compare and contrast a film watched earlier in the semester with your current selection, analyzing and discussing the common themes present in both works. Additionally, explore how the context of time and place intersects to alter the meaning and purpose of these themes within each film.

- If I had to compare and contrast films throughout the semester, I would have to compare Jean-Michel Basquiat  film with Andy Warhol. In terms of how the film was made on both ends, they’re pretty similar to each other, they both show off what their lives was like back when they were still alive, shows off old images and old footage of what they were both like, and most of all they would show off how they would both make art in their respective visions as a whole as well. In terms of Andy Warhol’s vision, he was involved during the Pop Art movement and his artwork would revolve around using celebrities, vibrant color schemes, and everyday products like the Campbell Soup Cans. Andy Warhol would also be inspired by the likes of Marcel Duchamp and Jasper Johns. In terms of Basquiat’s vision focused on African and Caribbean art styles, and also being inspired by jazz music, poetry, and American cultures as well. Both artists wanted to be known for their works of art and the messages they wanted to bring when their works of art were displayed, wanting to send a message and hopefully inspire other people to make works of art similar to theirs.
