Lesson 7: Minimalism - Pop

 1. In the film, you are essentially given a tour of Lichtenstein's artistic thought process from his own mouth. Discuss his approach to making art in terms of where and how he is inspired and what he chooses for his subject matter.

- In this documentary about Lichtenstein, it tells us, the audience, on his background in terms of how he made art, his backgrounds when it comes to making his artwork, and how or what drove him to making said works of art as well. His first exposure to the art scene is in the comic book scene, also being inspired by seeing logos, brand names, and cartoon characters as well. Roy went on to make a style using bold lining, bright colors, dot patterns, and sometimes adding wording as well, making his artwork pop out more, giving his works of art a feel as if you’re scrolling through a comic book. As mentioned, the subject matter that speaks out to Roy the most is pop art, besides that, he made pop art through parody, using different characters throughout the cartoon world, like Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse.

2. What do you feel drove Lichtenstein as an art maker? How did he reference pop culture?

- When viewing at Roy’s artwork once again, the only works of art that drove me into liking his artwork is his comic book-like works of art, whether it be House I, Girl in Mirror, and Happy Tears. What drove me into his artwork is the already mentioned comic book-like aesthetic Roy brought to the table, along with the super vibrant colors and sometimes patterns, whether it be the person’s face or the background, it ties the whole piece together. Another work that he made that caught my eye is Woman with Flowered Hat in which he took a more abstract approach and took inspiration from a portrait by Pablo Picasso, since Picasso was a big name in terms of inspirations for Lichtenstein.

3. Some of Lichtenstein's critics have said he was a plagiarist, not an artist. What are your thoughts on the matter?

- To me, when I saw and read that Lichtenstein was a plagiarist and not an artist, I began to view at the works he made involving some iconic comic strips and various cartoon characters as well. Roy would also put the Bam or any other comic book effects in a different spot when he recreates a comic strip or any cartoon characters. Lichtenstein. To me, whenever I see his work, he uses cartoon characters from other companies, that may be true, but I see him making said characters and even comic strips in his own style. He would also use his own vibrant colors for his work, also bold lining and different textures when it comes to his comic book-like works.
