Lesson 5- Film 1: Van Gogh - Schama

 1. Which is your favorite Van Gogh self-portrait painting? Why? How was it made? How does it control your eye? When you look, what do you see first? second? Does it bother you that Van Gogh refused to be photographed? Which is your favorite sunflower painting? Why? How was it made? How does it control your eye? When you look, what do you see first? second? What does it mean to you?

- To me, my favorite self portrait painting of Van Gogh is his his self portrait with a gray felt hat. I liked how he made his self portraits, using different color schemes when it comes to different self portraits of himself as well, he also uses scatter dots and colors in the background, also using overall reduction of the size of brush marks when making said self portraits. Whenever I see his self portraits, the first thing that catches my eye is the different color of brushstrokes used in the piece, and it’s the first thing I noticed, that and the different color chimes used for each self portrait made. It does bother me that Van Gogh refused to be photographed a lot besides being photographed a few times, I feel like that almost defeats the purpose of making a self portrait, since no image was used for reference when making the painting. My favorite sunflower painting of Van Gogh’s is the one with the yellow background, this was made using oil paint and gives it a 3D like perspective as well, when it comes with the painting made. The first thing I saw in the painting was the different shades of yellow that was used throughout the painting. It shows a whole lot of different color shades and it just makes the painting pop out more in my opinion.

2. Which scene in this film affected you the most either conceptually, emotionally or physically? Why? How did Schama accomplish this? Did it make the film better?

- To me, the scene that affected me is that Van Gogh was unwell both mentally and physically, since he cut off his ear, since he had a temper against Paul Gauguin. Along with that, near the end of the video, Van Gogh looked like he was speaking to himself in the mirror, showing off that besides being unwell both mentally and physically, it shows off that he’s suffering from self-mutilation, showing that he’s a tortured artist as well.

3. Van Gogh made over 1000 paintings in 10 years. This is more than any other painter we have discussed. Do you think his paintings are better or worse because of this approach? Skill aside, if you finished a new painting every day how would it change you / the world?

- In my opinion, Van Gogh’s paintings has gotten more better the more times he made paintings, using different styles, and whether it be using different strokes, linework, or making the painting more wavy, he’s using different techniques whenever he makes different works of art.  If I ended up finishing a painting, I feel like it would change me as a whole and it would inspire me to just make more paintings, using different techniques and approaches.
