Lesson 3: Film 7- Civilization/Collings
- Who is Matthew Collings? Why should we believe his stories? Collings chose to discuss a wide range of art history. Why? What was his point?
- Matthew Collings is a British art critic, broadcaster, writer, and artist, born in September 1955, in London, United Kingdom, he is still living at the age of 68 years of age. He also made and wrote books such as This is Modern Art, This is Civilization, and Art Crazy Nation as well. To me, I feel like we should believe his stories, I say this because he gives us an inside look of paintings being brought up throughout the film, also throwing in what the significance is behind it as well. Collings decided to discuss from a wide range of are history because he wanted to discuss about how the paintings would start to evolve in terms of development over time, seeing how each paining would tell more of a story and have more meaning behind it all.
- What storytelling approaches did Collings use to tell his stories? Compare his film to those of Marlow, Bruce, Schama, Greenaway, Hockney and Me. Who is the worst story teller so far? Why?
- In terms of storytelling, Collings went to different locations and kept explaining to us, the watchers, the backstory of any certain paintings that was brought up and the different artists that was brought up as well. During this process, he also gave his own thoughts/backstory to how the painting was made and once again, mentioning the significance behind the piece as well. Comparing this with any other presenters, I feel like that Schama doesn’t include other interviews from people to they wud give their thoughts on a painter or a painter’s piece as a whole, mainly because it was mainly Schama for the entire video, him talking about said painter and what work the painter/artist has done.
- What image from your generation do you think will survive to speak to future generations? PASTE THIS IMAGE IN YOUR BLOG! What will that image say about our current civilization (will it be positive or negative?) Explain.
- To me, whenever I think of something that happened from my generation, the first thing that clicked in was the COVID-19 pandemic back in 2020. We were all under attack by this virus that spread throughout the globe, forcing us to quarantine for a good chunk of days/week, making us have class via Zoom. To me, this will always impact me because I was in my senior year of high school and I was supposed to graduate in May but it got pushed back to July as well. The image I chose that would describe the pandemic as a whole is titled “A Quiet Place”, which shows a girl in a mask looking out the window, showing that she can’t go outside especially during the pandemic, which just pains me to see because she wants to go outside to wither hangout or just play, but she’d have to wear a mask and keep her social distance as well.
