Lesson 4: Impressionists Session 1

1: Do a little research on the artists featured in the film. Which artist appeals to you the most? Why?

- Throughout the YouTube video, several artists were featured, each from different art styles and backgrounds as well. The first person mentioned was Claude Monet, who was a French painter born on November 14th, 1840 and passed away on December 5th, 1928, he was mostly known for the Water Lillies painting series. Pierre-Auguste Renoir is a French artist, born on February 25th, 1841 and passed away on December 3rd, 1919, he was known for his landscape paintings and intimate portraits. Camille Pissarro is a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter, born on July 10th, 1830 and passed away on November 13th, 1903, he was known as the “Father of Impressionism” since he mostly paints urban and rural French landscapes. The last painter that was mentioned is Frederic Bazille, a French Impressionist painter, born on December 6th, 1841 and passed away on November 28th, 1870, he was known for making paintings of contemporary life. In terms of what artist appeals to me the most, Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s artwork appeals me the most because he focused solely on the landscapes, also using a contemporary color scheme along with sweeping brush strokes to make the painting pop out more.

2: How are paintings of the Impressionists distinctly different than those before them? What does Avant Garde mean? How does it relate to the art in this film? Is Impressionism a step in the right direction? Why? Do you think that these paintings are visually appealing? Why?

- In my opinion, the Impressionist paintings have a different point of view and mindset when it comes to painting. When it comes to an Impressionist painting, the painter always attempts to get a good impression of whatever might be in front of them, whether it be a certain object, a different landscape, or a specific person. Avant-Garde is a work of art that is considered to be an experiment. Avant Garde would start to play a big role during the late 19th entry, and that would be their innovation as well. Impressionism would be in the right direction because it would give these artists a new feel and start with new techniques when it comes to making different types of artwork. These paintings to me are indeed visually appealing because of the use of the already mentioned different techniques used when it comes to making works of art, same goes with the color scheme and how it makes the piece more interesting as a whole.

3: What do you believe are the three most critical elements of Impressionist paintings?

- In terms of making an Impressionist painting, there are three elements needed to make said painting. The first element to make an Impressionist painting is the use of light an dhow much is being used, being used to apply a thick coating of paint, making it look like the painting is being reflected when light is shown. The second element that’s used is what brushstrokes is used when painting, different painters sometimes use different types of strokes, adding more detail to the painting, whether it be light strokes, heavy strokes, its also about the movement when it comes to the mentioned strokes. The third and final element that’s used for an Impressionist is composition used, whether it be focusing on what the mood and what the atmosphere might be in terms of what painting is being made.
