Film 3: Modern Marvels-Paint
- What is Paint? What are it’s component parts? What are it’s functions?
Paint is a pigmented liquid that dries to form a solid protective film, makes it easier to apply, and harder to get off. Paint by itself has three basic components, the first is resin, which is the binder that holds the pigment together. The second is the pigment, which can be any chemical, like minerals, makes the substance any color it wants to be. The third and final component is the solvent, which are used to disperse the components used in the paint mixture, making sure the paint doesn’t end up coming out in lumps.
- What do you think were the 3 most significant evolutions in paint? Why?
The first significant evolution when it comes to paint started with finding different types of pigments from the ground and also using minerals as well, pounding it into powder, mixing the pigment in the resin and in the solvent to get the desired color back in the day. As the years went on, big machinery would be used to sift out the titanium, cooked in furnaces, turning the metal white, so getting mixed into dry and wet ingredients. Soon during WWII, latex resin would soon be used to the mix in making paint as well, sealed into big paint cans. Linseed oil would be used for manufacturers as well, also mixing alcohol and acids to make a desired color of paint. As of now, paint is still being made this way, mixed into the resin, solvent, and pigments, being broken down, stored and shipped out as well.
- What is a painting and how long should it last? Is it important that a painting lasts for 500 years? 30,000 Years? Why?
A painting is a form of art that anybody can get into whether they ant to express themselves, it can express emotions, any ideas the painter might have. a painting can be made in entirely different ways, like two-dimensional, three-dimensional, abstract, the list goes on. In my honest opinion, depending on how a painting’s been made, it can last for almost a decade. In terms of a painting that should last in tens of thousands of years, I believe a painting can last for as long as it wants. I say this because a painting may be viewed by an audience and maybe a painting makes them want to come back to see the painting, the significance behind it, and why it was made in the first place.
