Film 2: Michelangelo-Marlow
- Who was Michelangelo?
Michelangelo is an Italian Renaissance sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, born on March 6th, 1475 in Rome, Italy. When he was young, he went to a grammar school, soon, his father found out that Michelangelo focused more on drawing than his academic studies in grammar school. Michelangelo soon joined a workshop to be a painter, learning new techniques, also getting around to drawing a nude model as well. After succeeding in the said workshop, he soon joined an academy surrounded by different sculptures, soon starting to become a sculpture artist. He passed away on February 18th, 1564 at the age of 88.
- What were his most significant contributions to art, society, science, or history? Give an example and support your statement with facts.
In terms of contributions to the art world, he made a sculpture titled Battle of the Centaurs which would show the struggle between reason and passion. That would also be the first sculpture that Michelangelo made, showing that he shifted his focus on making other sculptures as well. In 1497, he made another sculpture titled the Pieta, commissioned by a French Ambassador. That sculpture would symbolize Michelangelo’s relationship with his mother who passed away. Another contribution is Michelangelo’s iconic David sculpture, which would symbolize civil liberties and the independence of Florence as a whole.
