Lesson 5- Film 3: Picasso - Braque

1. Discuss Schnabel's point (in your own words) about painting vs film.

- In terms of Schnabel’s point of painting vs film, he stated that when it comes to film it’s mostly around motion pictures and also shows a rich diversity in terms of visual art forms, since it shows a cinematic sequence as well. In terms of painting, it gives it expressions, in terms of what the painter wants to create on the canvas as well, also shows how bold or vibrant the artist can be in terms of color scheme.

2. Discuss the mountain climber metaphor - and how it is different / similar to other artists we have discussed.

- The mountain climber metaphor is treated is used in the art world in terms of discussions, going through an artist’s life and his progression, and moving on up, going to bigger and better heights, similar to how a climber/hiker would go up a mountain. Artists must start their journey by climbing the said mountain, working on improving their artwork, getting critiqued every now and then, only to get better with what they make, whether it be digital, painting, or photography, the artist needs to work extra hard to get on top of the mountain to succeed.

3.  How does this documentary deal with expertise and point of view? (hint: Scorsese is not an art historian)

- Throughout the documentary, it showed us what looked to be very old film, sometimes in color and sometimes in back and white as well, the narrator throughout the film doing a great job with providing us with some good information of what the world was like back in the day in terms of the subject matter. Also bringing up other narrators throughout the documentary, giving their insight in terms of the world back then ties the entire film together as a whole.
